Irritable bowel syndrome is a condition in which there is a disorder of the intestines causing symptoms.  Some people having IBS can have watery diarrhoea, some can have constipation or some can have both.

Symptoms

  • Abdominal pain.
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation.
  • Abdominal cramps.
  • Feeling of fullness or bloating.
  • Gas.

Diagnostic Tests

There is no specific test for IBS.  After learning about the symptoms, the doctor will perform a physical examination and will be able to explain the condition.

Treatment

There is no cure for the condition, treatment only helps in relieving the symptoms.

It includes:

  • Medications to ease diarrhoea.
  • Medications to relieve constipation.
  • Antidepressant medications to treat depression.
  • Antispasmodic medications.
  • Antibiotics to treat diarrhoea.
  • Avoid dairy products that can worsen diarrhoea.
  • Take a healthy diet full of fibre, veggies and fruits.
