The ABCs Of Diabetes: Diabetics Must Know

  • A– stands for HbA1C the blood test that measures the average blood sugar in the past 3 months.
  • B– stands for Blood pressure and it is most important to keep blood pressure under control to prevent the risks of heart attack, kidney disease, and stroke.
  • C– stands for Cholesterol levels. Increased levels of cholesterol cause the risks of heart disease, kidney disease, strokes and other serious conditions.

Blood sugar levels should be kept under control to prevent serious conditions such as:

  • Blood pressure

  • HbA1C should be less than 7%
  • Blood pressure should be 140/90 or less.
  • Cholesterol which means LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) levels should be below 100.

  • Medication:- A person should take medications for diabetes as prescribed to control blood sugar and also needs to check blood sugar on regular basis. Medications for managing cholesterol and blood pressure should also be taken regularly to prevent other medical conditions such as kidney problems, heart problems, stroke and other medical problems.
  • Lifestyle changes include diet modification, being active, no smoking, weight management, avoiding alcohol.
