Mitral regurgitation is the condition in which there is a problem with the mitral valve connecting the human heart.  Normally, the blood flows in one direction, i.e., blood flows from the left atrium to the left ventricle, then through the whole body. The function of the mitral valve is to prevent the backflow of blood in the left atrium, but when there is a problem with the mitral valve, the blood flows back in the left atrium causing problems.

Symptoms

In the early stages, it does not cause any symptoms, but when a person has larger mitral regurgitation, then it causes symptoms.

  • Shortness of breath.
  • Chest pain.
  • Weakness.
  • Swelling in legs, ankles and feet.

Diagnostic Tests

  • Electrocardiogram or ECG that checks for electrical activity of the heart.
  • Chest x-ray to check for fluid in lungs, the general shape of heart.

Treatment
