An anal abscess is the pus-filled growth in the anal region and is formed when the gland in the anus gets infected.
The anal fistula is the tunnel that is formed between the gland in the anus and the abscess.
Symptoms
Symptoms of anal abscess:
- Severe pain in the perianal region.
- Fever.
- Feeling of sickness.
- Tiredness.
Symptoms of anal fistula:
- Redness and itchiness of the skin near the anus.
- Pus discharge from the anus.
Diagnostic Tests
After learning about the symptoms, the doctor will perform a physical examination which includes performing a “digital anal test” in which the doctor or nurse will put a gloved finger up the anus and will check for any lump or abnormal growth in the anus, and will advise for a certain tests such as an imaging test which includes MRI and CT scan.
Treatment
- Anal Abscess:
-An anal abscess requires drainage of the pus. This can be done in the clinic, and if the person is having a large abscess, then it requires in-hospital treatment. - Anal Fistula:
-When a person is having a shallow fistula, then it is cut open and pus is drained, so that the fistula can be healed.
-When a person has a deep fistula, the doctor performs more than one procedure which includes placing a special thread in the place after draining the fistula which remains there for the period of 6 weeks until the symptoms are relieved. Then in the second step, the fistula is fixed using different procedures such as sealing off the fistula, tying the fistula, or special glue or plugging the fistula.
